In moving forward

We have made grand, new assumptions with bold, innovative
ideas— only to find that these notions are a century or more
old.

So it was when we decided to change the image of MICRO-
COSM. As we reviewed our ideas and started implementing
change, we discovered that what we were molding was an
updated version of what MIC had been—as early as 1910 and
perhaps even as late as the fifties.

What we wanted to say was what women (and some men)
had been saying for years and years. We found that our beliefs
on woman's role in the world were the same basic beliefs that
Mary Wollstonecraft held in 1792, that Sojourner Truth held
in 1851, and that Harriet Beecher Stowe held in 1885.

Simmons College was founded at the turn of the century to
provide career opportunities for women. Today the goal is not
so different. And, at least, what we have learned from our
education is to be more aware of our womanness, more aware
of our opportunities, more aware of the barriers we've yet to
overcome, and most important to be more aware of ourselves.

Linda Feldman
Editor-in-Chief

Wisdom or sec„

To be female is not enough unless

one can be female enough,

And enough of a female is not wise.

We separate body from hands,
Leaving the body to creation
and the hands to pray and wash
again and again.

Alone is sad, but not as sad

some say

as together and dying

Liz Doyle, Simmons

In the new code of laws which I suppose it
will be necessary to make, I desire you would
remember the ladies and be more generous
and favorable to them than your ancestors. Do
not put such unlimited power into the hands
of the husbands. Remember, all men would be
tyrants if they could. If particular care and
attention is not paid to the ladies, we are
determined to foment a rebellion, and will not
hold ourselves bound by any laws in which
we have no voice or representation.

What Woman needs is not as a woman to act or rule,
but as a nature to grow, as an intellect to discern, as a
soul to live freely, and unimpeded to unfold such
powers as were given her when we left our common
home.

Margaret Fuller, 1844

We may safely assert that the knowledge that
men can acquire of women, even as they have
been and are, without reference to what they
might be, is wretchedly imperfect and superficial
and will always be so until women themselves
have told all that they have to tell.

John Stuart Mill

Taught from infancy that beauty is woman's
sceptre, the mind shapes itself to the body, and
roaming round its gilt cage, only seeks to adorn
its prison.

I have another duty, just as sacred . . . My duty to myself ... I
believe that before everything else I'm a human being . . . just as much
as you are ... or at any rate I shall try to become one. I know quite
well that most people would agree with you, Torvald, and that you
have a warrant for it in books; but I can't be satisfied any longer with
what most people say, and with what's in books. I must think things
out for myself and try to understand them.

The intention of your
being taught needle-work;
knitting and such-like, is
not on account of the
intrinsic value of all you
can do with your hands,
which is trifling, but to
enable you to judge more
perfectly of that kind of
work, and to direct the
execution of it in others.
Another principal end is to
enable you to fill up, in
some tolerably agreeable
way, some of the many
solitary hours you must
necessarily spend at home.

"Like other 'old guards', the veterans of feminism
will not surrender but will fall upon the field of battle.
The little girls there below will one day celebrate their
memory. For through their struggles the ways became
free for youth, the way which leads out to the side sea
where perhaps shipwreck awaits the one who ventures
out into the darkness with her fragile skiff. But many
will brave the voyage and bid their fate, strong, proud

Thus women's secrets I've surveyed
And let them see how curiously they're made,
And that, tho' they of different sexes be,
Yet in the whole they are the same as we.
For those that have the strictest searchers been,
Find women are but men turned outside in;
And men, if they but cast their eyes about,
May find they're women with their inside out.

Wall, chilern, whar dar is so much racket dar must be
somethin' out o' kilter. I tink dat 'twixt de niggers of
de Souf and de womin at de Norf, all talkin' 'bout
rights, de white men will be in a fix pretty soon. But
what's all dis here talkin' 'bout?

Dat man ober dar say dat womin needs to be helped
into carriages and lifted ober ditches, and to hab the
best place everywhar. Nobody ever helps me into
carriages, or ober mud-puddles, or gibs me any best
place! And a'm't I a woman? Look at my arm! I have

ploughed, and planted and gathered into barns, and no
man could head me! And a'n't I a woman? I could
work as much and eat as much as a man — when I
could get it — and bear de lash as well! And a'n't I a
woman? I have borne thirteen chilern, and seen 'em
mos' all sold off to slavery, and when I cried out with
my mother's grief, none but Jesus heard me. And a'n't
I a woman? . . . Den dat little little man in black dar,
he say womin can't have as much rights as men, 'cause
Christ wasn't a woman! Whar did your Christ come

and a woman? Man had nothin' to do wid him!

From the first years to which
my memory stretches, I have
been a disappointed woman.
When, with my brothers, I
reached forth after sources of
knowledge, I was reproved with,
"It isn't fit for you; it doesn't
belong to women." ... In
education, in marriage, in
religion, in everything,
disappointment is the lot of
woman. It shall be the business
of my life to deepen this
disappointment in every
woman's heart until she bows
down to it no longer.

In the beginning everyone was given a cup from which to drink life.
As we drink of the buttercups, the bees, the cactus and the trees, we
mustn't omit a thing. Absorb everything from the smallest grain of
dust to the largest mountain peak. Between these limitless limits
find all the prairies, woods, ants and riverlets. Melt into life and
become a part of every part of life.

Fail not! Watch the sunset's roll of warm colors creep across the
horizon. Interfere with the smooth quiet rocks and search for the
key they hold from you. For that key opens up the answers of all the
earth's curiosities of life. Seek this key always for you will never
find it.

As my eyes pierce the clear sky, I drink from my cup of life. My
eyes move from the clouds on the mountain peaks to the range of
trees, and the fields of swaying grass. A tear appears in my eyes,
softly questionning: "Why is my cup now broken?"
